LIU BROOKLYN RELIES ON JVC GY-HM750U PROHD CAMCORDER FOR INTENSIVE VIDEO PRODUCTION COURSE

WAYNE, NJ (September 21, 2011)– JVC Professional Products Company, a division of JVC Americas Corp., today announced that Long Island University’s Brooklyn Campus (LIU Brooklyn) purchased three GY-HM750U ProHD compact shoulder-mount cameras, which were delivered in May.

Although the new cameras were designated primarily for studio use starting with the fall semester that began Sept. 7, Larry Banks, chair of the Media Arts Department at LIU’s Richard L. Conolly College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, used one of the cameras for “DV Intensive,” his one-week production course, in late May. “It’s the perfect blend of both an ENG and a studio camera,” he said.

The class started from scratch on a Monday morning and screened a finished project on Friday night. Students worked together as a team, handling all aspects of the production. The project, The Mr. Mango’s Experience, is a short narrative about the relationship between the owner of a bodega and the young adults who live above his store.

With such a tight deadline, the students relied on JVC’s established native file-based workflow to save time, while gaining valuable experience using a professional camcorder. Banks said the GY-HM750U delivers a clean picture, performs well in low-light situations, and is relatively simple to operate. In fact, the student director of photography for the “DV Intensive” class learned how to operate the camera in one day.

The GY-HM750U records footage on low-cost, non-proprietary SDHC memory cards, and Banks said the native file recording saved valuable time in the edit suite. With no transfer time required for the footage, students were able to begin editing using Final Cut Pro immediately. “Direct-to-edit is wonderful,” Banks added. “It’s a very nice, simple workflow.”

Ngo Vinh-Hoi, director of technology, Richard L. Conolly College, Division of the Arts, said the new GY-HM750Us are affordable, physically robust camcorders that deliver all the controls expected in ENG units. Plus, JVC camcorders do not rely heavily on proprietary menus for most operations, which makes it easier for students to adjust to other professional camcorders in the workplace. “We really want our students to be employable right out of the gate,” he explained.

LIU Brooklyn already owns a GY-HD250U and two GY-HM100U ProHD camcorders. The new JVC cameras, which will replace 20-year-old Sony cameras in the studio, are part of a major renovation. Banks said the updated studio also includes AJA digital recorders, a Grass Valley Kalypso switcher, and new graphics and audio equipment. Most renovations were complete by the time classes began in September, and Banks expects LIU Brooklyn students to produce a variety of programs for Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT TV).

Equipped with a 3-CCD imaging system, the GY-HM750U delivers outstanding 1920x1080 images in a lightweight form factor. It can record HD footage in 720p, 1080p, and 1080i, as well as SD footage (480i). Other features include extensive image customization, a high resolution (1.22 million pixel) LCOS viewfinder and 4.3-inch flip-out LCD monitor, and JVC’s patented Focus Assist functionality. The GY-HM750U also features two XLR audio inputs with phantom power, plus manual audio level controls with audio meter.
